5 GREAT MEXICO CITY COFFEE SHOPS

MEXICO GROWS INCREDIBLE COFFEE BEANS. It only makes sense that Mexico City has an extraordinary craft coffee scene.

I didn’t visit every coffee shop in Mexico City, naturally, although I have a ton of them on my Google map in order to make sure wherever I was wondering I wasn’t far away from an amazing pourover or espresso. So this isn’t a “BEST” list exactly - although we did a lot of research before we went to sort of narrow down our coffee shop favorites.

I’ve prepared multiple guides:

Here are some of the best coffee shops in Mexico City, my Mexico City coffee shop reviews, as a food/drink critic for Minnesota Monthly.

Curva Café de especialidad: Excellent pour-over, modern vibe, roasting in the back. This is a minimalist set-up where the coffee is the star. Order to take away or do what we did, pull up a stool, take a break, and enjoy beautifully made coffee that was roasted right in the shop. https://www.instagram.com/curva.cafe

Totte Para Todos: Incredibly small micro-roaster, Japanese coffee inspired. Truly exceptional espresso. Owner Kento Tanaka hails from Japan, they’ve got a counter-top roaster in this small, tucked away shop. Pastries come from Kento’s friend Madeleine and looked lovely (IG: madeleine.cdmx)

CAFÉ AVELLANEDA: While you’re waiting to get into the Frida Kahlo house & museum, you should wander over to one of Mexico City’s best coffee shops. Carlos de la Torre has won a number of international coffee competitions and he owns his own roastery, Jiribilla. Beautiful drinks, some of the best coffee I’ve ever had. https://www.instagram.com/avellanedakf/

ALMANEGRA CAFE: Wonderful pour over, great espresso, Almanegra is a terrific roaster that specializes in tiny Mexican farmers and producers. Four locations around CDMX, we enjoyed the pourover on a lovely tiny patio in Roma Norte. https://almanegra.cafe/

CASA CARDINAL: I really enjoyed the quality of the coffee at this Condesa coffee shop - an easy walk from Roma Norte. Alyssa loved the well-balanced espresso, I am a sucker for the pour-over. https://cardinalcoffeehouse.shop/

BONUS CHOCOLATERÍA PICK

CHOCOLATERÍA LA RIFA: Love this place - beautiful chocolates, you can select what type of chocolate you want as a drink, pick whether you want water or milk mixed. Just great stuff. https://www.instagram.com/larifachocolateria/
