EMPTY NESTER BEDROOM with Room & Board

Room & Board partnered with us on our bedroom makeover and provided furniture in exchange for social media and content.

Alyssa and I love Room & Board: Minnesota-based, incredible design, timeless quality coupled with contemporary style. We’ve been customers since we moved out here, buying our first piece of real furniture when we were in our late 20’s and had no kids. Now we’re empty-nesters because the kids are off at college, and we keep coming back to Room & Board.

It’s clean, it’s modern, it warms up a space instantly. We also love their commitment to the environment and the country - with 90% of their furniture made in America. The dresser and bedroom nightstands we picked out are actually made in Wisconsin out of American lumber.

We are new empty-nesters and moved from a suburban home into a city apartment. Just like our life has a bit of a blank slate right now, so did our bedroom. Our goals:

  • King-sized bed and mattress (we’ve always had a Queen bed)

  • Useable storage

  • A luxurious, Four Seasons Hotel feeling

We shopped at the Edina, Minnesota Room & Board with one of our absolute favorite design consultants, Heather. This is a free service at every Room & board - you get free design help. We pre-shopped online and then went into the store to make our choices.

the bed

We wanted a low-profile, platform bed - and the clean lines of the Wyatt work so well. You can pick from in-stock fabrics, but it was so fun to work with our design expert to pick a custom fabric.

Our Room & Board consultant draped different fabrics over the Wyatt headboard to help us decide

We picked Mori in Navy for the headboard. It’s dark, moody, sexy, just a perfect focal point for the room. AND it’s uniquely ours, which feels great. This bed is made in North Carolina.

THE DRESSER & NIGHTSTAND

We love the Hensley collection: it’s a modern mid-century design that feels so organic to us in Minnesota, as we are not far away from the Wisconsin woodworkers who craft Hensley from domestically sourced wood. We were drawn to the soft curves - the drawer pulls mimic the rounded edges of the nightstand and the dresser. Just a little softness goes a long way.

The lamp is such a cool shape, and we loved the natural look at the ceramic base. They’re made at House of Troy in northern Vermont. We picked grey but the moss, glacier and coal glazes are also gorgeous.

THE MATTRESS

I hate mattress shopping because it’s so complicated, but Room & Board made it so simple.

Three choices: Essential, Luxury Serene foam & coil mattress, and Natural which is made with latex. We tested them in the store and landed on Luxury Serene, all of these are made in Minnesota.

THE BEDDING

It was so convenient to pick out our bedding all at the same time - and Room & Board even sells bedding bundles, where you can pick your color scheme and buy the whole thing, including the pillows. We had more fun working with our design expert to pick out our colors and pillows- we wanted earthy, calm but a pop of color. And aren’t the Ida throw pillows so cool!?! Complimenting the headboard and not competing with it.

THE ART

We wanted a large-scale piece to hang over the dresser, and were immediately drawn to Gabriel Belgeonne’s “Ecriture Constante,” which means Constant Writing., Belgeonne is a Belgian artist known for his work in engraving, lithography, painting and drawing.
