The crust is great, the slices are big, but my favorite things at Hello Pizza near 44th & France in Minneapolis aren’t of the pizza variety.
It’s a salad and a meatball sandwich.
The smokey greens salad ($7.50) is big enough for four people to share, or for one person to have as a huge entree. It’s simple: mixed greens, Moody bleu cheese, and spiced pepitas. But the house made sherry vinaigrette and the applewood smoked onions makes the whole thing – smokey. It’s awesome. And it proves that you can easily innovate on something as simple as a salad.
The korean cowboy ($7.95) just might be the best meatball sandwich I’ve ever had (my second place goes to Sweet Taste of Italy – but that’s just because of the bread). Hello makes the meatballs in-house with Niman Ranch beef and Berkshire pork, tops it with a gochujang barbeque sauce (a spicy fermented chili paste with a hint of sweetness), and then topped with pickled onions, daikon, carrot, cilantro and basil. The balance of sweet, spicy, meaty deliciousness on a really wonderful toasted roll absolutely made my night.
We went for dinner on a Saturday night at 7pm, and while the place had a steady line, most of it was for pick up. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the New Yorker Pie slice (house-made fennel sausage is always a hit with me), but next time I’ll be back for the salad and the balls.
